French botanist and traveler. The son of botanist Andre Michaux (1746-1802), he made several visits to the United States. In February 1806 he embarked on a sea voyage for Charleston (S.C.) but was captured by the British en route and detained in the Bermudas. He arrived in the United States in May 1806 and spent three years in America in study and travel. Among his published writings was a study of American forest trees.
